Vog

'Vog' (Volcanic Smog) is formed when sulfur dioxide gas reacts chemically with sunlight, oxygen, dust particles and water. When there is vog from the big island and Kona wind conditions, some of it ends up here on Oahu, making things generally hazy. The haze makes for prettier sunsets and sunrises, and Achoo! why am I sneezing so much?

Surfed Chun's today before work, really wierd, it changed every 20 minutes. First sloppy, only Jockos was breaking nice, then flat as a lake, then a set of tripple overheads!! Then sloppy again. Caught about 5, all closeouts though.

Southern Swell

Surfed Hau Bush, and Shark Country this morning. Probably the best session I've had since before Kona started blowing this year back in ..November? Glassy, easy paddling, clear channels and waist to overhead faces to drop from. I'll be smiling all day.

Playing around with Processing some more. Trying to come up with a graphing system to show relationships between objects. Click on the screenshot to load the app in your browser.

Gone Fishing!

My Grand-Pa Carver spent yesterday packing for the biggest fishing trip ever. I think he's been looking forward to it ever since my Grand-Nanny headed to the Lake in September. He's missed her a lot and its been hard for my folks to keep him from feeling restless around the house. Royce Benjamin Carver was an outstanding role model, a fine grand father, and excellent cat fisherman. I'm not really in any hurry, but when my time comes too I can't wait to run the lines with him again. Love you Grandpa, see you in a while.

Achoo!

Left work in the middle of the afternoon yesterday. Head cold. I got about 12 ours sleep last night, and tried to get through practice before work this morning. I realized half way through at about a quarter of six that I would need to red shirt today.

iGoogle

If you use iGoogle as your home page you may know about different widgets like clocks and maps you can drag in to customize the page. You can also set a page theme. Its fun and pretty simple to do. Its a bit more of a challenge to create your own (theme). I've been working on and off on a theme for my new peers at Referentia, and finally figured out how to get it working so that it changes 5 times a day. Its still kind of in beta I haven't actually submitted it to Google yet. Here's the source if you are curious.

Quiz Bowl

Dave organized a Quiz Bowl team to represent Referentia in a fund raiser for College Connections Hawaii. The event was held at the Japanese Cultural Center just North of Waikiki. Unfortunately, we didn't survive the pre-quals. Dinner was great though, and the MaiTais were killer. (This picture is of some Kabuki art on display on the mezanine outside the ballroom.)

I went West on my own and surfed Pokai Bay earlier in the day, faces were maybe waist high, but fairly smooth. I had some easy long rides with some nice switch backs. Fun.

Hello World

Aaron and I got to talking about the amazing potential of Processing, a new Java based graphics language. I've been reading on it some for a while, but have been putting off a "hello world". Well finally, here it is...10 random colored random placed rectangles connected by bezier curves defined by using neighboring points as lines for tangents to the curve. The crazy thing is it was all done in less than 20 lines of code. Powerful!
